Harry Bertoia Furniture

Harry Bertoia was an Italian-American artist and designer known for merging sculpture, sound, and furniture design. Born in Italy and raised in the United States, he studied metalwork and design at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, where he interacted with influential figures such as Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen.

In 1952, Bertoia collaborated with Knoll to design a groundbreaking series of wire furniture, including the celebrated Bertoia Diamond Chair. Made from welded steel rods, the design demonstrated how industrial materials could create both structural strength and visual lightness. Beyond furniture, Bertoia devoted much of his career to creating large-scale sculptures and experimental “sonambient” sound sculptures, exploring the relationship between movement, space, and sound.
