From Wine Importer to the Science of Light

Founded in 1874 in Copenhagen as a wine import business, Louis Poulsen turned to lighting in the early 20th century. In 1926, architect and cultural critic Poul Henningsen developed System PH — a three-shade design that used mathematical calculation to diffuse light softly and eliminate glare, selling 30,000 lamps by 1931. Henningsen went on to mentor designer Verner Panton within the brand. Now part of the Flos B&B Italia Group, Louis Poulsen's collections are available in Western Canada exclusively through Livingspace.

Poul Henningsen conceived System PH in 1926, using mathematical calculation and the golden hour as his reference to eliminate glare and diffuse light softly. In 2026, Louis Poulsen marked the design’s centenary with PHorever, an exhibition and commemorative PH Centenary Collection.
